The AirHogs fell short twice on Wednesday with a final score of 4-2 in both games versus the Shreveport-Bossier Captains. A new record attendance was set at QuikTrip Park, with 6,475 schoolchildren on hand for the 10:35 a.m. Game 1. In the first game of a Wednesday double-header, the AirHogs lost one late falling behind after a three-run sixth.
Grand Prairie got all their offense out early, putting up a two spot in the second, but were quiet after that. Matt Green went the distance in a shortened seven inning game, where he allowed four runs on five hits. He was solid early on, setting down Shreveport-Bossier in order the first three innings.
Green had a no-hitter until the fourth, where Jonathan Reynoso looped one over the shortstop’s head for a single. Later on in the inning Richard Paz put the Captains on the board with a RBI single to cut the lead in half to 2-1.
In the sixth, Dwayne White walked to load the bases with one out, then Andres Rodriguez put one into left to take the lead 3-1. Rafael Ozuna followed up with a single of his own, this time to right, to plate the final runs of the game and make it 4-2.
In the second game Pat Mahomes took the hill for his AirHogs debut. He struggled throughout his start despite a scoreless first. In the second, Geoff Wagner singled and scored two, leaving runners on the corners with only one out. Dwayne White hit a two-out line drive down the right field line for a double, scoring two to make it 4-0. Finally Andres Rodriguez flied out to end the inning.
Grand Prairie responded with one run in the third. Cesar Nicolas doubled and capitalized on a Shreveport-Bossier error at first base to get on the board to cut the deficit down to three.
David Espinosa led off the sixth for the AirHogs and walked, but then Aaron Garza got on with a failed fielders choice to put two on with two outs. A deep Brandon Carter fly ball advanced Espinosa to third with one out. Then the Captains put in Matt Petty in relief.
Cesar Nicolas capped off a three-for-three day with a RBI single to score Espinosa and make it 4-2. Billy Munoz popped out to the first baseman on the mound, caused a collision, but still made the catch.
Robert Romero finished off the Hogs’ in the seventh, allowing only a hit.
The AirHogs fall to 3-9 and will play the Shreveport-Bossier Captains again tomorrow night at 7:05 at QuikTrip Park. Tomorrow marks the first Thirsty Thursday of the season featuring $1 Beers. It is also Service Industry Night featuring $3 admission for service industry workers and celebrity chef, Kent Rathbun will toss the ceremonial first pitch.
