BILLY MARTIN JR. AS MANAGER
GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – The Texas AirHogs are pleased to announce Billy Martin Jr. as Field Manager and President of Baseball Operations for the organization. Growing up playing the game, and later in his role as an agent, Martin Jr. brings his depth of knowledge in baseball and business to the AirHogs organization.
An alumnus of Texas Tech University, Martin Jr. was a two-sport athlete for the baseball and soccer team and earned his degree in Telecommunications. After college, Martin Jr. returned to DFW to begin his career in sports television where he produced local and cable shows including fantasy baseball and football. He went onto produce Sunday Night Showtime hosted by Grand Prairie native Randy Galloway and The Scoop with Kevin Kennedy. After nine years in sports production, Martin Jr. made the transition to a professional baseball agent in 1995.
As an agent for over two decades, Martin Jr. knows how to communicate with players and has a proven history of assisting his players in getting to the next level.
“Being an agent for 20 years, I’ve worked for the player. I know what players want, I know what players need,” Martin Jr. said.
AirHogs General Manager, JT Onyett, believes Martin Jr. will be great for the team, organization and the local community. “We are very excited for Billy to join the AirHogs family,” Onyett said. “After interviewing several candidates we felt Billy’s philosophy, values and direction align with our vision for this organization. Fans can expect to see him as an active participant in our community along with our front office staff.”
Martin Jr., son of former major leaguer and five-time World Series Champion Billy Martin, will make his managerial debut on May 18 at the Ballpark in Grand Prairie as the AirHogs take on the Fargo Moorhead RedHawks.
The new skipper spoke about his vision for the AirHogs organization, players and fans.
“I want everyone who walks through the front gates to be able to see, touch and feel the authentic baseball atmosphere at our ballpark,” Martin Jr. said. “Fans can expect our players to sign autographs after every game and show support at local community events. I hope we can win a lot of games and championships and assist in our players’ journey to the major leagues.”
Martin Jr. is a proud father of three, Billy III, 18, Gunner Mantle, 17, Olivia Grace, 14 and resides in Arlington, Texas.
