GRAND PRAIRIE -- The Texas AirHogs exploded for a season-high 8 runs and 14 hits Thursday at AirHogs Stadium vs. Wichita but fell just short against the Wingnuts. The visitors captured Game 1 of a 3-game set in Grand Prairie by a final of 9-8.
Wichita came out strong against AirHogs starter Michael Freeman, building a 4-0 lead in the 1st. Texas quickly bounced back with 4 runs in the 2nd off Wichita starter Alex Boshers. The inning was highlighted by a 2-RBI single from Ryne Willard.
Wichita stole the lead back in the 5th, scoring 3 times. Matt Chavez keyed the rally with a 2-RBI triple off Jacob Morris, who inherited multiple baserunners from Freeman. Ryan Wagner bashed a 2-out, 2-RBI double in the bottom half of the 5th to pull the AirHogs to within 7-6.
Levi Scott helped tie the game for the AirHogs in the 7th with an RBI base hit. The Wingnuts rallied for 2 runs in the 9th off Texas reliever Jared Mortensen, but the AirHog bats were not done. Facing Seth Harvey with 2 aboard in the bottom of the 9th, Denis Phipps sent a double to the left field corner to make it 9-8. Wagner was then intentionally walked to load the bases with 1 out. The comeback was not to be though, as Harvey buckled down to retire Michael Miller and Beamer Weems via foul out and bounce out to end the game.
The win went to James Campbell, who fired a scoreless 8th in relief. It was his 1st of the season. The loss was the 1st for Mortensen, and the save was the 3rd for Harvey. Cameron Monger led the way with 3 hits for the AirHogs and was 1 of 5 Texas batters with multiple hits in the game. 4 Wingnuts finished with multi-hit efforts.
The AirHogs (4-16) continue the series with Wichita (13-8) tomorrow. LHP James Russell (1-1, 2.52 ERA) is expected to start for the AirHogs vs. RHP Ryan Kussmaul (1-2, 4.01 ERA) for Wichita. 1st pitch is slated for 7:05 pm.
