WINNIPEG, MB -- The AirHogs got back in the win column by upending the Winnipeg Goldeyes 4-1 at Shaw Park Monday evening. The team got a terrific start from Roman Gomez and accumulated a season-high 16 hits in its first victory since May 26th.

In his first start in the American Association, Gomez dazzled, holding the top offense in the league to just 3 hits in 6 shutout innings. Gomez struck out 3 and did not allow a man into scoring position. He picked up his 1st win of the year.

The AirHogs gave him plenty of early support. Cameron Monger reached and stole a base before coming home on the 1st of 2 RBIs by Beamer Weems to make it 1-0 AirHogs in the 2nd. Michael Miller came in on an RBI sacrifice fly in the 4th by Ryne Willard to extend the lead to 2-0.

Levi Scott smashed his 2nd home run of the season in the 5th off of Winnipeg starter Zach Nuding. The 2nd Weems RBI improved the lead to 4-0 in Nuding’s last inning of work. The Goldeyes starter was tagged for 10 hits in 5 innings. Scott finished with 4 hits in the game and was just a triple shy of the cycle. Brian Ragira added 4 hits of his own.

The Winnipeg defense committed 4 errors in the game to help fuel the AirHogs' early advantage. The home team threatened to get back in it in the 7th, loading the bases against reliever Jacob Morris before Morris picked up a strikeout and induced a double play at the plate on a tremendous throw from center field after a fly ball by Trevor Sealey.

Winnipeg picked up its only run of the game in the 8th, but Josh Blanco picked up his 1st save of the season by striking out the side in the 9th. The AirHogs and the Goldeyes meet tomorrow in an 11 am Game 2. RHP Scott Firth (1-3, 5.12 ERA) is expected to start for the AirHogs vs. RHP Edwin Carl (1-0, 3.07 ERA) for the Goldeyes.
