GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – For the second day in a row, the Grand Prairie AirHogs did not have a single runner even reach third base, as they were shut out by the El Paso Diablos 2-0 on Tuesday at QuikTrip Park – a day after being blanked 7-0 by Kansas City.
Reyes Dorado (1-2) pitched six strong innings in his first start of the year for El Paso (25-35), striking out three, walking one and allowing only two hits. He only let two men on once, but got Bryan Frichter to hit into a 4-6-3 double play to end the fifth with two on and one out.
Justin Harper, Tim Adleman and Marcel Prado each pitched a scoreless inning after that, as the Diablos allowed only four AirHogs over the minimum to bat on the night.
El Paso got its runs in the fifth off Reymond Cruz (4-4), who was traded to Grand Prairie earlier in the day from the Diablos along with catcher Scott Clement in exchange for Zane Chavez.
Jonathan Cisneros led off the frame with a long home run to right, and after JJ Muse grounded out, two singles put runners at the corners for Reid Fronk, who hit a sacrifice fly to center.
Cruz ended up going seven innings, allowing six hits and three walks to go along with three strikeouts. But his strong start was overshadowed by Dorado and co., and the AirHogs (39-24) could never mount the rally to pick him up.
Notes: Welington Dotel (2-for-4) was the only player with multiple hits…The AirHogs also released pitcher Will Irvin on Tuesday…El Paso pitchers combined for seven strikeouts, and they were all swinging...The four hits was a season low for Grand Prairie.
