SIOUX CITY, Iowa - The AirHogs won their 3-game series in Sioux City with a 9-4 clinching victory Sunday. RHP Matt Shepherd picked up his first W this season, and Burt Reynolds and Mike Miller each went deep to power the victory.
It didn't take long for Reynolds to get the AirHogs on the board. After Juan Sanchez singled off Explorer starter Graham Johnson with 1-out in the top of the 1st, Reynolds went deep for his 14th home run in 30 games. The American Association record for a full season stands at 30 (CJ Ziegler, 2013).
The Explorers tagged Shepherd for a run on a walk, a base hit and sacrifice fly by Noah Perio in the bottom of the first.
After Will DuPont made the Texas advantage 3-1 with a sacrifice fly in the top of the 2nd, the Explorers capitalized on an AirHogs error for a 2-run bottom of the 3rd to tie the score at 3.
In the 5th though, the AirHogs re-seized the advantage. Devon Rodriguez picked up an RBI single that scored team runs leader Reynolds for the 2nd time. Miller then teed off for his 5th home run of the season to put team up 7-3.
Shepherd held the Explorers scoreless from the 4th to the 6th. David Wayne Russo, Alan Oaks and Carlos Misell combined to hold the potent Sioux City offense to just 1 run from the 7th to the 9th. The trio set away 8 in a row to seal the win.
Cody Lenahan provided late insurance in the top of the 7th with a 2-RBI double. Shepherd picked up his 1st W, while the loss was the 1st of the season for Johnson.
The AirHogs (13-17) take on the Gary Southshore Railcats (14-15) tomorrow evening at AirHogs Stadium. RHP Cody Hebner will start for Texas.
