SIOUX FALLS, South Dakota - The AirHogs fell to the Sioux Falls Canaries 10-6 in Game 1 of a 4-game set at Sioux Falls Stadium Thursday. The team launched 4 home runs, including 2 by Association home run leader Burt Reynolds, but fell short in a comeback effort.
Carlos Misell started for the AirHogs and found trouble in the 3rd through 5th after posting 2 scoreless frames to start. The Canaries got to him for 3 in the 3rd, 2 in the 4th, and 3 in the 5th. The home side’s offensive attack was led by Ethan Chapman, who finished 3 for 5 with 2 runs scored and an RBI, as well as DH J.C. Linares, who went deep against Misell to start the 5th, and B.J. Guinn, who went off for a 2-run homer against reliever Griffin Russell in the 7th.
The AirHogs got on the board on the 9th home run of 2016 by Cody Lenahan in the top of the 4th against Canaries starter Dylan Thompson. Reynolds took reliever Josh Ferrell deep to lead off the 6th, and Brian Bistagne blasted his 8th home run of the season in the 8th to cut a 10-2 lead for the Canaries to 10-5. The shot came off James Jones.
Reynolds smashed his 2nd homer of the game and 23rd of the season off closer Billy Waltrip in the 9th to trim the lead to 10-6, but the AirHogs could get no closer. With the 2 roundtrippers, Reynolds has once again moved in front of the pace set by C.J. Ziegler, who set the American Association record with 30 home runs in a 100-game season in 2013.
Misell absorbed his 5th loss, while Thompson picked up his 2nd win. The AirHogs (25-45) will send Derek Callahan to the mound tomorrow in a battle of the lefties vs. Joe Bircher for the Canaries (25-45). First pitch is slated for 7:05 pm.
