AirHogs Drop Heartbreaker To Laredo In Game 2

08/16/2016 11:10 PM -

LAREDO, Texas - Laredo scored 4 times in the 8th and 9th to take Game 2 in Laredo Tuesday, winning on a walkoff 2-run home run by Denis Phipps. Juan Sanchez finished with a home run and an RBI double for the AirHogs.

Sanchez got the team off to a great start vs. righty Jose Nivar on the mound for Laredo. Sanchez took him for a solo home run to lead off the game and make it 1-0 AirHogs. The blast was the 9th of the season for Sanchez. The shortstop would tag Nivar in the 5th for an RBI double to score Kenny Peoples-Walls and then would score himself on an error by 3B Abel Nieves to run the early advantage to 3-0.

AirHogs starter Cody Hebner was sharp, allowing just 2 hits and striking out 6 before exiting with tightness in the 4th. Tyler Ihrig finished that frame and went on to fire scoreless innings in the 5th and 6th before turning the ball over to Trey Masek.

Masek allowed 2 to reach with walks in the 7th but induced the 2nd double play of the game turned by the AirHogs defense to escape the trouble. He surrendered 4 hits and 2 runs in the 8th but maintained the lead with the help of a key caught stealing by catcher Mike Miller.

With the AirHogs leading 3-2, Alan Oaks entered to go for his 6th save. With 1 out, Nieves tagged him for a single to left before Phipps ended the game by sending his 17th home run of the season over the left field wall as steady rain fell at Uni-Trade Stadium. The runs were the first surrendered by Oaks since June 20th.

Oaks absorbed the loss, his 4th, while Luis De La Cruz, who pitched a 1-2-3 top of the 9th, picked up his 2nd win. The AirHogs (28-54) and the Lemurs (45-37) meet again tomorrow at 7:05 at Uni-Trade Stadium to close the series. LHP David Wayne Russo is expected to start for the AirHogs.
