GRAND PRAIRIE -- The contracts of AirHogs pitchers Tyler Watson and Austin Kubitza have been purchased by the Seattle Mariners organization. Offseason signees for new manager Billy Martin, the hurlers are the first AirHogs to have contracts sold to MLB organizations in 2017.
A native of Georgetown, Texas, Watson pitched at the University of Kansas and McLennan Community College before being drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in 2014. A 38th round pick, he spent three years in the Angels’ system, pitching in the Arizona League as well as in rookie-level Orem and single-A Burlington. Over 3 seasons professionally, Watson has made 81 appearances, going 6-8 with a 3.89 ERA.
Kubitza, an alum of Colleyville Heritage and Rice University, will join Watson in the Mariners system. The Arlington native posted a career 20-14 record and a 2.33 ERA over 3 years at Rice before the Detroit Tigers selected him in the 4th round of the 2013 MLB Draft. Kubitza split time last season between the high-A Lakeland Flying Tigers and AA Erie SeaWolves. He is 23-20 career at the MiLB level with 301 strikeouts and a 4.26 ERA.
Contracts for both pitchers were officially purchased on May 11th.
