GRAND PRAIRIE -- The AirHogs swept a doubleheader and won the series vs. the Wichita Wingnuts Wednesday at AirHogs Stadium, taking Game 1 5-0 and Game 2 2-1. The team will take its first road trip of the season starting Friday in Gary.
The AirHogs got off to a strong beginning with the bats in Game 1 in support of starter Tyler Bremer. Beamer Weems picked up an RBI to score leadoff man Alvaro Rondon in the bottom half of the 1st. The AirHogs would add 2 more in the bottom of the 2nd on a 2-RBI single by Brian Ragira. Levi Scott increased the lead to 5-0 by driving in 2 with a base hit of his own in the 3rd.
The offensive output in the early innings was more than enough for Bremer, who moved to 1-0 on the season by firing 6 innings of 3-hit ball. He struck out 7 before passing off to Michael Freeman to finish on the mound. AirHog pitching induced 3 double plays in the game and did not allow a runner to 3rd base.
Alex Boshers (1-1) suffered the loss in Game 1 for Wichita. Ryan Kussmaul started Game 2 for the Wingnuts vs. lefty and MLB vet James Russell for the AirHogs. Russell was dominant, allowing just 1 run on a homer by Christian Stringer in the 4th. He struck out 5, scattered 6 hits and did not allow a walk.
Texas got a 2-RBI base hit in the 3rd from Denis Phipps to score Trevor Sealey and Jake Luce, who led the frame off with a double. The lead was enough for Russell, who notched the 1st complete game of the season for the team. Kussmaul dropped to 0-2 with the loss.
The AirHogs (3-4) travel to US Steel Yard starting Friday vs. the RailCats (3-3). RHP Carlos Contreras is expected to start Game 1 vs. LHP Jeff McKenzie. The squad returns to Grand Prairie after a 6-game road swing through Gary and Lincoln June 5th vs. St. Paul.
