GARY, Indiana -- The Texas AirHogs dropped Game 2 in Gary 1-0 Saturday afternoon, falling despite outhitting the RailCats 6-3. The teams will meet in a rubber match Sunday evening at 6:10 pm to decide the series.
Scott Firth allowed just 1 hit over 6 innings while striking out 9 in a great battle with Gary righty Charle Rosario. Firth faced the minimum in every inning except for the 5th, when an infield single, a walk, and 2 hit-by-pitches helped the RailCats score the only run of the game. Firth has now pitched 12 innings this season with only 1 run allowed.
Rosario spun 7 innings of 5-hit, 0-walk baseball to pick up the win. In the 1st, Alvaro Rondon reached 3rd base after singling but was left. Ryan Wagner led off the 5th with a double but was erased on a fielder’s choice at 3rd. Denis Phipps doubled with 2 outs in the 6th but was caught stealing at 3rd base. The AirHogs and RailCats each stranded 5 on base.
Firth’s 9 strikeouts were a new single-game high this season for a Texas starter. Reliever Roman Gomez debuted for the team in the 7th and added 2 strikeouts of his own. Mark Pope pitched a scoreless 8th frame.
Carlos Diaz held the AirHogs in check in the 8th before Jorge De Leon picked up his 1st save of the year in the 9th. Beamer Weems reached with a single in the final frame vs. De Leon before the RailCats closer notched the final outs against Phipps and Levi Scott to end the game.
Texas (4-5) closes the series in Gary (5-4) tomorrow night at 6:10 pm before traveling to Lincoln to begin a Monday to Wednesday series. LHP Griffin Russell (0-1, 9.00 ERA) is expected to start against RailCats LHP Alex Gunn (0-0, 3.72 ERA). A live broadcast will be available at mixlr.com/TXAirHogs.
