GRAND PRAIRIE -- The Texas AirHogs battled back from an 8-1 deficit but dropped their series finale with the Wichita Wingnuts by a final score of 10-6. The AirHogs outhit the Wingnuts 12-11 but could not fully erase an early deficit.
AirHogs starter Tyler Bremer was tagged for 8 runs in 4.2 innings of work. The AirHogs got out to an early lead of 1-0 in the 1st on an RBI base hit by Levi Scott to score Alvaro Rondon before the Wingnuts scored 4 in the 2nd.
After Bremer exited the game in the 5th, Carlos Contreras entered and set down all 10 men he faced. The AirHogs chipped away at the 7-run deficit with a steady comeback effort that crescendoed with a 3-run 8th. Brian Ragira picked up 2 RBIs in the 8th with a double to the right field corner.
A 9th-inning home run by Matt Chavez helped Wichita put the game out of reach, but there were plenty of positives for a rebounding AirHogs offense. Alvaro Rondon stole his American Association-best 13th base and scored 2 runs to bring his total in the series to 7. Ryne Willard finished with 3 hits and 4 times reaching.
The AirHogs begin a 7-game road swing that will take the team to Winnipeg and Sioux City. The squad opens at Shaw Park Monday at 7 pm vs. the defending champion Goldeyes. A live broadcast of the action will be available at mixlr.com/TXAirHogs.
