WICHITA -- The Texas AirHogs dropped the opener of a 4-game set to the Wichita Wingnuts 10-2 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium Monday evening. Trevor Sealey picked up a run scored and an RBI in the effort. The teams continue the series tomorrow at 7:05.
The Wingnuts tagged Texas starter Austin Kubitza for 7 runs over 3 innings to jump out to a large early lead. Kubitza struck out 4. Jared Mortensen pitched the 4th through the 7th, allowing 3 runs before Billy Waltrip posted a scoreless 8th frame.
Trailing 8-0 in the 5th, the AirHogs broke through with a 2-out rally. Sealey, Casio Grider and Jake Taylor all reached vs. Wingnuts starter Alex Boshers, with Taylor bringing in Sealey on an infield single. The team added a late run in the 9th after play was delayed by heavy rain in the 8th for approximately 30 minutes. Sealey picked up an RBI by bringing in Charley Thurber against Wichita relief man Jared Wilson.
Boshers went 8 frames and scattered 6 hits, holding the AirHogs to just the tally in the 5th to secure his 5th win of the season. Kubitza suffered his 1st loss. The contest was the Rice University alum’s 1st start with the AirHogs. Brennen Salgado finished 2 for 3 with 3 runs scored and Richard Prigatano finished 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs to pace the Wingnuts. Brent Clevlen posted 2 RBIs of his own.
The AirHogs (10-27) battle the Wingnuts (26-11) tomorrow at 7:05 in the 2nd of a 4-game set. LHP James Russell (2-1, 2.40 ERA) is expected to start for the AirHogs vs. RHP Ryan Kussmaul (4-2, 3.38 ERA) for Wichita. A live broadcast will be available at mixlr.com/TXAirHogs.
