WICHITA -- The Texas AirHogs won Game 2 of their 4-game set in Wichita in dramatic fashion Tuesday. Beamer Weems hit a 3-run home run in the 7th to tie the game at 3 and scored the go-ahead run in the 9th to help the squad to a 4-3 win.
James Russell got the start for the AirHogs and surrendered solo home runs to Harrison Kain and Brent Clevlen in the 1st. He settled down to allow just 1 run the rest of the way while pitching through the 6th. Russell surrendered 10 hits and 0 walks while striking out 4 in a no-decision.
Wichita righty Ryan Kussmaul shut the AirHogs out for his 1st 6 innings. Weems slammed a 3-run home run off him in the 7th to equalize the score. The home run was the 2nd of the season for Weems and his 1st since May 18. Kussmaul finished with 10 strikeouts and scattered 7 hits in 6 ⅔ innings of no-decision work.
Jacob Morris posted scoreless frames on the mound in the 7th and 8th without allowing a baserunner. Weems led off the top of the 9th with a double to center off Wichita reliever Seth Harvey. After he moved to 3rd on a sac bunt by Mike Miller, Ryne Willard brought him home with a base hit to right center.
Luis De La Cruz picked up his 6th save of the season by stranding a baserunner and picking up a strikeout in the bottom of the 9th. The win improved Morris to 1-1 on the year. The loss dropped Harvey to 1-1. Weems, Willard and Trevor Sealey all finished with multiple hits for the AirHogs. Kain, Clevlen and Martin Medina all posted multi-hit evenings for the Wingnuts. The win was the AirHogs 3rd by 1 run this season and 2nd in the last 4 games.
The AirHogs (11-27) take on the Wingnuts (26-12) again tomorrow at 7:05 in the 3rd of a 4-game set. RHP TJ Bozeman (2-2, 3.04 ERA) is expected to start for the AirHogs vs. RHP Eddie Medina (4-1, 3.41 ERA) for Wichita. A live broadcast will be available at mixlr.com/TXAirHogs.
