AirHogs Sweep Doubleheader, Series vs. Salina

GRAND PRAIRIE -- The Texas AirHogs took both games in a doubleheader vs. Salina to sweep their 3-game set Sunday at AirHogs Stadium. The team scored a season-high 9 runs in Game 1 to win 9-1 and got the 3rd complete game of the season by James Russell to finish the day with a 6-3 win.

The AirHogs benefited from 7 walks given out by Salina starter Connor Bach in Game 1. The team would accumulate 5 hits against him and add 4 more vs. relief man Dillon Sunnafrank. A 5-run 3rd, highlighted by an RBI double by Beamer Weems and a 2-RBI single from Charley Thurber, propelled the runaway win.

Jared Mortensen tossed 5 shutout innings to get his 1st W of the season. Mortensen surpassed 100 career independent minor league strikeouts and 400 career professional strikeouts with 4 Ks in the game. Bach dropped to 1-4 with the loss.

Levi Scott finished with 3 RBIs, 2 of which came on a home run in the 6th off Sunnafrank. The blast was his 4th of the season. Charley Thurber and Scott each finished with multiple hits.

The AirHogs got out to an 1-0 early lead in Game 2 that was erased when Salina tagged Russell for 3 hits and 2 runs in the 3rd. Trevor Sealey helped the team draw level in the 4th with an RBI double that scored Ryne Willard. In the 5th, Willard took Stockade starter Jake Eaton for a 2-out, 3-run home run that gave the AirHogs a lead they would not relinquish.

Brian Ragira finished 2 for 3 with 2 doubles and a run scored. Casio Grider finished 2 for 3 as well and finished with a total of 6 times reaching in the doubleheader. Russell went the full 7, allowing 6 hits, 3 runs and 0 walks while striking out 8. The win improved him to 3-1. The loss took Eaton to 0-1 on the year. The AirHogs improved to 4-2 in home doubleheaders this season. The series sweep was the team's 1st of 2017.

The AirHogs (14-29) welcome the Lincoln Saltdogs (24-17) to town tomorrow at 5:05 to begin a 3-game set. RHP TJ Bozeman (2-3, 3.64 ERA) is expected to start for the AirHogs vs. RHP Derek Gordon (2-2, 3.68 ERA) for Lincoln.
