GRAND PRAIRIE -- The Texas AirHogs, in conjunction with the Can-Am League and the American Association, are happy to announce that lefty starter James Russell has been selected to the 2017 American Association/Can-Am League All-Star Game.
An alum of Colleyville Heritage High School and the University of Texas, Russell pitched for the Chicago Cubs, Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies from 2010-2016. The 7-year MLB vet is in his 1st year with the AirHogs and his 1st year in the American Association.
As a Longhorn, Russell went 8-4 with a 3.86 ERA and 91 strikeouts in 2007. The Chicago Cubs selected him in the 14th round of the 2007 MLB Draft, and he debuted at the MLB level in 2010, beginning a string of 4 seasons of at least 50 appearances out of the Chicago bullpen.
Russell split time between the Cubs and Braves in 2014 before making 49 appearances for Chicago in 2015. He spent 2016 with the Philadelphia Phillies and their AAA affiliate, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.
The 31-year-old southpaw has made 394 appearances on the mound in the MLB, going 10-18 with 4.08 ERA and 243 strikeouts. So far in the American Association, he has gone 3-1 with a 2.79 ERA. He has accumulated 46 strikeouts while walking just 6.
Russell has thrown 3 complete games for the AirHogs, including an extra-inning complete game June 17 in Sioux City in which he shutout 1 of the league’s best offenses while allowing just 5 hits. He struck out a season-high 10 vs. the Lincoln Saltdogs June 22. He is currently tied for 6th in the Association in earned run average.
James is the son of Texas Rangers Hall of Famer and 2-time MLB All-Star reliever Jeff Russell, who served as the AirHogs pitching coach from 2014-2016.
The 2017 American Association/Can-Am League All-Star Game will be held July 25th at RCGT Park in Ottawa, Ontario. The American Association All-Stars, led by Winnipeg Goldeyes manager Rick Forney, will battle the Can-Am All-Stars. Forney selected the pitchers and reserves for the American Association All-Star team while position players were determined by a vote of the American Association's field managers.
The full list of American Association All-Star selections is available HERE. Can-Am All-Stars will be announced Thursday.
