CLEBURNE -- Alvaro Rondon reached twice, picking up an RBI and a double, but the Texas AirHogs fell in their series finale at The Depot 3-1 Wednesday. The team enjoys a day off tomorrow before beginning a 3-game set in Sioux City on Friday.
Billy Waltrip got his 1st American Association start and held the Railroaders to just 2 runs over 6 innings. He surrendered 3 hits and a run in the 1st but settled down to allow just 1 run and 4 hits over the next 5 innings. He struck out 5 without issuing 0 walks.
His counterpart Jorge Martinez held the AirHogs to just 1 run over 7 innings. Martinez allowed just 4 hits in the game while striking out 4 and walking 2.
Rondon equalized the game in the 3rd with an RBI double to the left field corner that scored Trevor Sealey. Cleburne quickly re-seized the advantage though. Derrick Pyles scored Mitch Glasser for a 2nd time in the game with his 2nd RBI base hit to make it 2-1.
That score would hold until the 7th when reliever Scott Firth walked Oscar Mesa, who then stole 2nd. Mesa was advanced to 3rd on a sacrifice bunt and scored on an infield single by KC Huth.
The loss dropped Waltrip to 0-3 on the season. The win improved Martinez to 2-5. Winston Abreu earned his 13th save of the season by tossing a scoreless 9th. The teams combined for 12 hits in the game, and 11 of them were singles.
The AirHogs (20-32) travel to Sioux City Friday to start a 3-game series vs. the Explorers (26-23). RHP Jared Mortensen is expected to start Game 1. The Explorers' starter is TBD. 1st pitch is slated for 7:05 pm. A live broadcast will be available at mixlr.com/TXAirHogs.
