SIOUX CITY -- The Texas AirHogs scored an 8-4 win again in Sioux City Saturday evening. Denis Phipps finished with 3 hits, including a solo home run, to help the team clinch its 5th straight series.
The team led 2-1 after 5 before hitting 3 home runs in the 6th to take a commanding 8-1 advantage. Phipps teed off Sioux City starter Cody Forsythe to start the frame. The solo blast was his 2nd of the series and 6th of the season.
Beamer Weems followed later in the frame with his 2nd of the series and 5th of the season, a 3-run blast that put the AirHogs up 6-1. Alvaro Rondon launched a 2-run shot to put an exclamation point on an incredible inning. His was his 1st of 2017.
TJ Bozeman moved to 3-4 on the season by throwing 6 innings without giving up an earned run. He struck out 7 without issuing a walk. His counterpart Forsythe surrendered 8 earned runs in dropping to 3-5 on the year.
Austin Kubitza picked up his 1st save by pitching 3 innings of 3-run ball after Bozeman. Rondon and Phipps each finished with multiple hits in the game. The AirHogs won despite being outhit in the game 9-8. Explorers pitching issued 2 hit-by-pitches and 7 walks in the game. The 6-run inning matched the highest single-frame output for the offense in 2017.
The AirHogs (22-32) and the Explorers (26-26) close the series tomorrow. LHP Michael Freeman (3-1, 2.84 ERA) will be on the mound for the AirHogs vs. RHP Kurt Heyer (3-5, 5.40 ERA) for Sioux City. 1st pitch is slated for 6:05 pm. A live broadcast will be available at mixlr.com/TXAirHogs.
