AirHogs Fall In Opener vs. Sioux Falls

GRAND PRAIRIE -- The Texas AirHogs dropped the opener of a 3-game set with the Sioux Falls Canaries Friday by a final of 9-6. The teams meet again tomorrow at 7:05.

TJ Bozeman got the start for the AirHogs and went 5 innings, surrendering 2 runs on 3 hits in the 1st before facing just 10 from the 2nd through the 4th. The Canaries bats tagged him for 5 runs in the 5th before he turned the ball over to Austin Kubitza in the 6th. Bozeman struck out 5 and walked 2. 5 of the 6 runs he surrendered were earned. He got a no-decision.

Down 2-0, the AirHogs got 1 run off Sioux Falls starter Troy Marks in the 1st before adding 2 more in the 3rd to take a 3-2 lead. After the Canaries got to Bozeman for the 5 runs in the 5th, the bats bailed him out by tagging Marks for 3 to even the game at 6.


Denis Phipps and Brian Ragira each finished with 2 hits in the game. Phipps picked up 2 RBIs and scored twice. Ragira added a run and an RBI of his own. The AirHogs were outhit 12-8 in the contest.

Austin Kubitza surrendered a single run in the 6th to put Sioux Falls up 1. The 1-run Canaries lead held to the 9th, when the visitors added 2 runs (1 earned) off Scott Firth to build the final advantage.

Sioux Falls was led by Chris Jacobs, who finished with 2 hits and 3 RBIs. Ty Morrison had 3 hits in the game and scored 3 times. Every spot in the order reached for Sioux Falls.

The AirHogs committed 3 errors in the game vs. 2 for the Canaries. The AirHogs left 9 in the game. Kubitza took the loss and slipped to 1-2 on the season. Starter Troy Marks was relieved in the 5th by James Jones, who finished with 2 innings pitched to pick up the win. He improved to 1-2. Jose Ortega earned his 11th save of the season by stranding 1 in the bottom of the 9th.

The AirHogs (25-34) and Canaries (27-32) meet again tomorrow at 7:05. LHP Michael Freeman (3-2, 3.79 ERA) is expected to start for Texas vs. RHP Miles Nordgren (3-3, 5.04 ERA) for Sioux Falls.
