Canaries Use Big 9th To Take Game 2

GRAND PRAIRIE -- The Texas AirHogs dropped Game 2 of a 3-game set with the Sioux Falls Canaries 10-4 Saturday at AirHogs Stadium. The AirHogs scored 3 times from the 4th through the 6th to make a 4-0 deficit 4-3 before Sioux Falls scored 6 in the 9th to put the game away.

Michael Freeman got the start for the AirHogs. He allowed 7 hits and 7 walks but also stranded 8 baserunners, including 7 in scoring position. Freeman exited the game after 4 innings having surrendered 4 runs.

The Texas bats got going in the 4th against his counterpart, Miles Nordgren. Charley Thurber, Alvaro Rondon and Beamer Weems picked up RBIs in the middle innings vs. the Sioux Falls starter to shave the deficit to just 1 run. Nordgren went 6 innings and scattered 9 hits. He exited in line for the victory.

Kevin Hilton tossed 2 scoreless innings in relief before Austin Kubitza took over for Texas. Kubitza racked up 2 scoreless frames as well in the 7th and 8th to keep the AirHogs close.


Texas almost tied the contest in the 7th when Rondon singled and advanced 2 bases on a wild pitch. He attempted to score from 3rd on a bouncer to 3rd only to be caught on a close play by Canaries 3rd baseman Louis Mele and catcher Mike Falsetti.

The Canaries batted 10 in the 9th, tagging Kubitza for 6 runs (4 earned) on 5 hits, 2 errors and a hit-by-pitch. Luis De La Cruz finished the frame for the AirHogs. The bats added a run in the bottom of the 9th but could not get any closer.

Nordgren picked up the win to improve to 4-3 on the season. Freeman dropped to 3-3 with the loss. Andrew Woeck pitched the final 2 innings for the Canaries, entering the contest while it was a 1-run game and picking up his 2nd save in the process.

Sioux Falls was led Jabari Henry and Ty Morrison, who each finished with 3 hits and combined for 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Rondon finished with 3 hits in the game, and Ryan Wagner racked up 2. The AirHogs left 8 on base in the game. Sioux Falls stranded 13.

The AirHogs (25-35) and the Canaries (28-32) finish the series tomorrow at 6:05. Texas will look to salvage a game behind RHP Tyler Bremer (4-4, 3.21 ERA). Sioux Falls is expected to start LHP Joe Bircher (3-5, 4.77 ERA). A live stream of the game will be available at mixlr.com/TXAirHogs and American Association Baseball TV.
