GRAND PRAIRIE -- Jared Mortensen struck out 10 over 6 innings, and the Texas AirHogs cruised to a series finale win over the Gary SouthShore RailCats 5-1 Tuesday at AirHogs Stadium. Charley Thurber and Casio Grider each picked up 2 RBIs in the game.
Mortensen was superb from the outset, striking out 4 over his 1st 2 frames. He ended up tossing 6 innings of 7-hit, 0-run ball while joining James Russell, Billy Waltrip, and Tyler Bremer in the club of AirHogs starters who have struck out 10 in a contest this year.
Thurber picked up an RBI in the 1st, scoring Alvaro Rondon after Rondon led the frame off with a single vs. Gary starter Charle Rosario. Jake Taylor and Thurber drove in runs in the 3rd on a sacrifice fly and a double respectively to swell the lead to 3-0. Rondon finished on base 4 times, stole 3 bases and scored twice.
Grider picked up 2 RBIs of his own with a double vs. Gary relief man Carlos Pinales in the 7th to put the game out of reach. Jacob Morris and Josh Blanco combined for 2 scoreless innings in relief of Mortensen before the RailCats tagged Luis De La Cruz for a single tally in the 9th.
The AirHogs earned the win despite being outhit in the game 11-10. Gary had 4 bats who finished with multiple hits in the game. Rondon, Grider, and Trevor Sealey all finished with multiple hits for the AirHogs. Ryan Wagner caught 3 runners stealing in the game and was part of 2 strike-him-out-throw-him-out situations with Mortensen. The win snapped a 9-game losing skid for the AirHogs.
Rosario, who struck out 7 over 6 innings while surrendering 6 hits, 3 runs, and a walk, fell to 8-5 with the loss. The win improved Mortensen, who has struck out 17 batters in his last 2 starts at AirHogs Stadium, to 4-1.
The AirHogs (26-42) enjoy a day off tomorrow and open a 4-game series in Sioux Falls (31-37) Thursday. 1st pitch at Sioux Falls Stadium is scheduled for 7:05 pm. Starters for each team are pending.
