GRAND PRAIRIE -- The Texas AirHogs are happy to announce the signing of righty relief pitcher Leuris Gomez. Formerly of the Lincoln Saltdogs, Gomez has appeared for the AirHogs in games in Kansas City and on the team’s most recent homestand vs. Gary.
Originally from Moca, Dominican Republic, Gomez began his professional career as an infielder in the Dominican Summer League as part of the Colorado Rockies system. He transitioned to pitching and joined Colorado’s Pioneer League affiliate in Casper in 2009.
Gomez ascended as high as the AAA level while part of the Rockies’ organization. He made 33 appearances for their Pacific Coast League affiliate in 2014, going 2-2 with an ERA of 4.47. Over 7 seasons pitching in affiliated ball, Gomez threw 431 innings, striking out 466 and walking 170. He owns a career 22-19 record and a 4.43 ERA in the MiLB.
2017 marks Gomez’s 1st season in the American Association and his 1st season in independent ball. He began the year with the Lincoln Saltdogs, making 21 appearances for the Central Division leaders. As a member of the Saltdogs, Gomez accumulated a 4-3 record and 27 strikeouts against just 7 walks while posting an ERA of 4.66. He faced the AirHogs 5 times in May, June, and July, going 5 ⅔ innings vs. his future team while surrendering just 1 run.
Gomez debuted for the AirHogs July 28th in Kansas City. He racked up 2 strikeouts in a scoreless frame at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. He made his Grand Prairie debut July 30th vs. Gary, surrendering 2 runs on 2 hits while striking out 3 over 2 innings.
Gomez and the AirHogs travel to Sioux Falls tomorrow to open a 4-game set at 7:05. LHP Billy Waltrip (1-3, 3.11 ERA) is set to start Game 1 for the AirHogs vs. RHP Troy Marks (3-5, 4.74 ERA) for the Canaries.
