GRAND PRAIRIE -- Friday, for the 2nd straight evening, the Cleburne Railroaders erased a 1-run deficit in the 7th frame at AirHogs Stadium to set up a 6-3 win. Beamer Weems and Denis Phipps each picked up RBIs in the game for the AirHogs, and Austin Kubitza turned in an outstanding start, but the team once again could not hold a late lead.
Kubitza got the start for Texas and dazzled, pitching into the 6th while allowing just 2 hits and 0 runs. He struck out 1 and walked 1 in a no-decision effort. His counterpart Dylan Mouzakes went 7, allowing 1 run and ultimately earning his 4th win of the season for Cleburne.
Kubitza was relieved by Scott Firth in the top of the 6th, and Firth stranded Alex Polston in scoring position to keep the contest tied 0-0. Casio Grider and Denis Phipps combined for back-to-back doubles off Mouzakes in the bottom of the 6th to give the AirHogs a 1-0 lead. The run was the 40th of the season for Grider, and the RBI was the 45th of the season for Phipps.
For the second straight night, the 1-run margin would not hold though. Cleburne scored 6 times off Firth in the 7th and 8th. KC Huth led the way with 2 hits and 4 RBIs. The 3 runs in the 7th gave the Railroaders the lead before they put the contest out of reach with 3 more on 4 hits with 2 outs in the 8th.
Cortland Cox fired scoreless 7th and 8th frames for Cleburne before Beamer Weems tagged him for a 2-RBI double in the 9th. Winston Abreu entered after Weems picked up RBIs 34 and 35 on the season and stranded him on 2nd by notching 2 straight strikeouts. The save for Abreu was his Association-best 17th of the season.
Phipps, Weems, Levi Scott and Ryan Wagner all finished with 2 hits. The AirHogs outhit Cleburne 9-8 but stranded 6 aboard. Firth slipped to 2-5 with the loss while Mouzakes improved to 6-5 between Fargo and Cleburne in 2017.
The AirHogs (30-47) continue the 4-game set with the Cleburne Railroaders (35-44) tomorrow at 7:05.
