GRAND PRAIRIE -- The Texas AirHogs are happy to announce the signing of LHP Mario Mendoza . The team has also engaged in a trade with Kansas City, sending LHP Billy Waltrip to the T-Bones in exchange for OF Joe Jackson and a player to be named later.
The 29-year-old Mendoza has pitched in the United League, the Pacific Association and, most recently, La Liga Norte de Mexico, where he pitched for Marineros de Ensenada . In 2016, he made 7 appearances for the Vallejo Admirals, throwing 8.1 innings and finishing 1 game. Between his stops in Edinburg, Brownsville and San Angelo of the UNLB and Vallejo, Mendoza went 1-1 over 2 years and 21 appearances on the mound. He signed with the AirHogs Saturday, August 12th.
The AirHogs and T-Bones completed their swap last week. Waltrip, the former Oklahoma Sooner, went 1-4 with a 3.85 ERA across 21 appearances and 5 starts this season for Texas. He turned in 6 scoreless innings in a 7-inning contest against his future team in Kansas City on July 27. Jackson, a native of Houston, TX, an alum of The Citadel, and the great-great-great nephew of the legendary Chicago White Sox star Joe Jackson, has hit .264 with 6 HR and 22 RBIs across 45 games this season. He has been on the inactive list since July 21.
The AirHogs (31-47) go for the split in a 4-game set with the Cleburne Railroaders (35-45) tonight at 6:05. Leuris Gomez (4-3, 4.71 ERA) is expected to start for the AirHogs. Cleburne is expected to start Patrick Mincey (6.67, 3.35 ERA). Texas currently trails Cleburne by 3 games for 2nd place in the South Division standings.
