Weems Goes Deep Twice But Salina Roars Back From Late Deficit

GRAND PRAIRIE -- The Texas AirHogs led 6-2 heading to the 8th in Game 2 of 3 vs. Salina Tuesday but could not hold on. The Stockade scored 7 times in the top of the 8th to run away with a 9-6 win. Beamer Weems hit 2 home runs and racked up 4 RBIs in the effort for Texas.

Weems hit his 1st homer of the day in the 2nd, a 2-run blast that put the AirHogs up on Salina and their starter Troy Mannebach 2-0. Weems would blast off again in the 4th for a solo homer that made it 3-0. The homers were his 6th and 7th of the season.

The AirHogs got 6 strong innings from Scott Firth on the mound. The starter limited the Stockade to 3 hits and 2 runs, both scored in the 6th.


Weems added an RBI double and Alvaro Rondon added an RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the 6th vs. reliever Tom Fazzini to run the lead from 3-2 to 5-2. Denis Phipps notched his 47th RBI of the season with an RBI groundout in the 7th against Lance Fairchild to inflate the advantage to 6-2.


Chris Cotton debuted for the AirHogs and set aside the Stockade 1-2-3 in the 7th before getting the 1st 2 outs of the 8th. Kewby Meyer singled off him to start a parade of 8 batters, 4 hits and 7 runs for the Stockade. The 2-out rally was highlighted by a 3-RBI triple from Javion Randle.

Chris Cummins faced the minimum in the 8th and 9th to earn a save for Salina. It was his 1st of the season. The win improved Fairchild to 1-0. The loss dropped Cotton, who ended up surrendering 6 runs (0 earned), to 0-1 in his AirHogs career.

The AirHogs (32-49) and the Stockade (15-66) play the rubber match in the series tomorrow at 3:05 pm. RHP Austin Kubitza is expected to start for the AirHogs.
