Scott Stars But AirHogs Go Down Late In Wichita

08/19/2017 10:01 PM -

WICHITA -- The Wichita Wingnuts captured Game 2 in the 3-game set vs. the AirHogs at Lawrence Dumont Stadium Saturday, scoring a go-ahead run in the 8th to win 3-2. Levi Scott finished with 3 hits in the game, including a home run. The contest was the 9th this season between Texas and Wichita that has been decided by 1 run.

The 5th long ball of the season for Scott put the AirHogs in front of Wichita starter Danny Gutierrez in the 1st 1-0. Leuris Gomez started for Texas and pitched 3 straight scoreless frames before Zac Fisher tagged him for a 2-run homer to give Wichita the lead in the 4th.

Gomez would end up going 6 in his 2nd start of the year for the AirHogs, limiting the powerful Wichita offense to just 6 hits. He struck out 2 and walked 1 in the no-decision. Gutierrez pitched 5 and allowed 2 hits and 1 run. He also took a no-decision.

The AirHogs tied the game in the 6th when Scott picked up his 2nd RBI, this one on a base hit vs. Jesse Pratt to score Alvaro Rondon. Texas got 2 in scoring position in the 7th but could not cash in.

Jacob Morris stranded 2 in the 7th before allowing 3 straight to reach and 1 to score in the 8th. Richard Prigatano scored Brent Clevlen with his 2nd hit of the game, a single to left to make it 3-2. Josh Blanco retired 3 straight behind Morris to leave 2 in scoring position and keep the AirHogs within 1 going to the 9th.

Ryan Kussmaul, who suffered the loss in Game 1, allowed a leadoff double to Charley Thurber in the 9th, but the AirHogs could not get a hit off the righty the rest of the way. He left pinch runner Trevor Sealey on 2nd to earn his 3rd save of the season.

Reliever Mike Devine, who induced a double play to face the minimum in the 8th, moved to 3-4 with the win. Morris slipped to 1-3 with the loss.

The AirHogs (34-50) and Wichita (51-33) play a rubber match to decide the series tomorrow at 1:05 pm. RHP TJ Bozeman (5-5, 2.88 ERA) is expected to start for Texas. RHP Tyler Kane (9-1. 3.42 ERA) is expected to start for Wichita.
