WICHITA -- The Texas AirHogs got home runs from Denis Phipps and Casio Grider but fell in the series finale at Lawrence Dumont Stadium Sunday afternoon by a final of 9-5. The team will travel back to Grand Prairie for a 4-game set vs. Salina before returning to Wichita next weekend.
TJ Bozeman got the start Sunday for Texas. The righty from Groesbeck lasted into the 6th, surrendering 5 runs (5 earned) on 5 hits. He struck out 8, walked 4, and dropped to 5-6 with the loss.
Martin Medina took Bozeman for a solo homer in the 1st before Phipps tied the game with a solo homer of his own off Wichita starter Tyler Kane. The homer was the 10th of the season for Phipps. Charley Thurber added an RBI double with 2 outs in the top of the 4th to score Grider and make it 2-1 AirHogs.
A 2-RBI triple by Brennen Salgado got the Wingnuts back in the lead before a top of the 6th long ball by Grider evened the score at 3 apiece. The homer was the 5th of the season for Grider.
In the 6th, the Wingnuts tagged Bozeman and relief man Chris Cotton for 6 runs to run away with the contest. The Wichita offense was led by Richard Prigatano, who finished 3 for 5 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs. Zac Fisher knocked in the 1st run of the 6th and would go on to finish the game with 2 runs scored.
The AirHogs got 2 tallies back in the 9th, with Ryne Willard and Alvaro Rondon picking up RBIs before Seth Harvey finished the game off. Kane, who went 6 and scattered 3 hits and 3 runs while walking 2 and striking out 1, improved to 10-1 with the win.
The AirHogs (34-51) open a 4-game set at home vs. the Stockade (16-68) tomorrow at 7:05. RHP Austin Kubitza (1-3, 5.92 ERA) is expected to start for Texas. The starter for Salina is TBA. A live stream of the game will be available at mixlr.com/TXAirHogs and American Association Baseball TV.
