GRAND PRAIRIE -- Denis Phipps collected 4 hits, but the AirHogs dropped the opener in their final series of the year 16-6 vs. Cleburne Friday at AirHogs Stadium. The teams meet again in Game 2 tomorrow at 7:05.
Mario Mendoza got the start for the AirHogs and allowed 9 runs on 6 hits and 5 walks. Sebastian Murray surrendered 5 runs in relief. Casio Grider and Shelby Ford finished the game on the mound, with Ford, the player-coach, firing 2 scoreless frames.
Dylan Mouzakes picked up the win on the hill for Cleburne. He went 6, allowing 4 hits, 5 walks and 1 run.
Phipps moved to 96 hits on the season with the 4-hit performance, in which he also picked up an RBI and a run scored. Ryne Willard finished with 2 hits. Trevor Sealey reached base 3 times. Ryan Wagner added a late home run, his 3rd of the season.
Cleburne was paced by Geraldo Valentin, who finished 3 for 5 with 2 runs and 4 RBIs. Blake Grant-Parks went 2 for 5 with a run and 3 RBIs. The win moved Mouzakes to 7-8 on the season. The loss dropped Mendoza to 1-1.
Texas (42-55) continues the series with Cleburne (45-51) tomorrow. 1st pitch is slated for 7:05 pm. RHP Cal Drummond (7-3, 4.61 ERA) is expected to start for the AirHogs.
