Position Spotlight: Outfield
Just under three weeks from the season opener in Kansas City, the AirHogs appear to be particularly strong in the outfield, with Michael Hur, Teo Martinez, and Burt Reynolds poised to help the team both offensively and defensively.
Hur, a highly-regarded defender who spent most of the last 5 years in Rockford, figures to anchor the defensive spread in center after turning in an incredible 2015 campaign. The Stevenson Ranch, California native racked up a .331 average and 119 hits at the plate in one of the finest full individual offensive seasons in Rockford Aviators history. He also fielded .992 in center, committing just 2 errors in 90 games, and often dazzling crowds with leaping plays on the warning track and at the wall. He will be joined by two players who spent last season in the MiLB.
Teo Martinez started 2015 as Hur’s teammate in Rockford, posting 13 hits and 6 RBI in 12 games before his contract was purchased by the Yankees. The 24-year-old would split time between the Yanks’ affiliates in the Gulf Coast and Florida State Leagues before reuniting with his former Rockford skipper James Frisbie this offseason. Defensively, he committed just 1 error in 2015.
Like Martinez, Burt Reynolds spent 2015 in the MiLB, doing his work for 3 Mariners’ affiliates in Bakersfield, Clinton, and Jackson. The 27-year-old racked up 11 HR, 46 RBI and 114 total bases for his 3 clubs. He accumulated 5 assists, playing mostly the corner outfield positions, in 2015.
