The time has finally come for AirHogs closer, LHP Tyler Matzek. After Matzek’s performance over the past month the writing was on the wall here in Grand Prairie. It was just a matter of time before an affiliated ball club came calling. Tyler Matzek will be leaving the Texas AirHogs and joining the Atlanta Braves AA affiliate the Mississippi Braves.
This comes after Matzek has been on a phenomenal stretch over the last month, but more so because of his play since joining the AirHogs in the beginning of June. So far this season Matzek has been one of the best options out of the bullpen, and has been clocked between 95-96 with a mean slider from the left side. Matzek has a 5-4 record with a 2.64 ERA and 3 saves on the season in 30.2 IP with an amazing 53 strikeouts to just 19 walks! Matzek has been especially brilliant since the middle of July when his ERA was at 4.96. Since July 10th Tyler Matzek has not allowed an ER in over 14.1 IP! In that same time span he has struck out 30 batters and allowed just 9 hits all while collecting 3 saves, and in doing so has seen his ERA lowered by more than 2 whole points.
Matzek will be an incredibly hard piece to replace for the AirHogs moving forward, but the entire organization is thrilled for the opportunity he has earned himself. Matzek’s play has been nothing short of amazing to watch this season, and his call up to AA is well deserved. The Hog faithful will be cheering him on in Mississippi, and hope the best for Tyler Matzek and his family moving forward!
